Scientific literacy tests were conducted for std VI and std IX.The tests were framed by me along with 3 trainees-Miss Viona Correia,Miss Alisha Vagekar and Miss Valmira Fernandes. These tests were framed according to the level of the classes and aimed to check the basic scientific literacy possessed by students at two different age levels.
A thorough analysis was done to find out what wrong answers were given by the students for certain questions and what misconceptions they had about a particular question. My expectation of class VI was 70% and of class IX was 50% but the results were very disappointing as even 50% of the students of class VI and 40% of the students of class IX could not answer all the questions correctly. The results showed that the students of both the classes -std VI and std IX had a meager knowledge of science.
Some of the surprising wrong answers given by the students for a few questions are shown below:
The scientific literacy test given for class VI had a question -
"Magnet will not attract a _________"
The correct option was 'plastic ruler'.The students couldn't answer even such a basic question. The option chosen by most of the students was 'iron nail' which in fact is an example of a magnetic material. This came as a surprise for me as this was a question from the chapter 'Fun with magnets' which I personally taught them.
The scientific literacy test given for class IX had a question -
''Which of the following is not a mammal?"
The correct option was 'penguin'.The options chosen by most of the students were either 'bat' or 'polar bear'.This was a very simple question much below the level of the class but the students could not answer it.
Another question given for class IX which was answered wrongly by most students was-
'The process by which milk is converted into curd is _______
The correct option was 'Fermentation'.The options chosen by the students were either 'pasteurization' or 'saponification'.
The test papers are given below:
