Technological literacy tests were conducted for std VI and std IX.The tests were framed by me along with 3 trainees-Miss Viona Correia,Miss Alisha Vagekar and Miss Valmira Fernandes.These tests were framed according to the level of the classes.The tests intended to check the basic technological literacy possessed by the students at two different age levels and how equipped they were with the knowledge of modern technology.
A comparative study was carried out to find out for which question the students faultered and what wrong answer was given by them for that question.My expectation of class VI was 80% and of class IX was 70% but only 60% of the students of class VI and 50% of the students of class IX could answer all the questions correctly.The results showed that the students of class VI and class IX did not have the required knowledge of technology expected at their respective age levels.
Some of the surprising wrong answers given by the students for a few questions are highlighted below:
The technological literacy test given for class VI had a question -
"The brain of the computer is ________."
The correct option was 'CPU'.The option chosen by most of the students was either 'monitor' or 'input devices'.This was very surprising as the students learn about the parts of the computer from class V.
The students also got confused while answering the following question-
'Which of the following is an input device?'
The correct option was'keyboard'.The students chose either 'printer' or 'monitor'.
The technological literacy test given for class IX had a question -
''OS stands for _________."
The correct option was 'Operating system'.The options chosen by most of the students were either 'open software' or 'optical sensor'.This was a very basic question but the students could not answer it.
Another question given for class IX which was answered wrongly by most students was-
'Temporary memory of computer is _______'
The correct option was 'RAM'.The options chosen by the students were either 'secondary memory' or 'ROM'.The students could not answer this question despite it being taught earlier in the lower classes.
